Concerning Applaws
Initially populating pet specialty retailers across the United Kingdom, Applaws first appeared in 2006. Later, around western Europe, North America, and Australia, the brand began to pop up. “Applaws is described by its parent company as “high quality, 100 percent natural, ethically sourced premium pet food”.

But there’s not much meaning to those buzzwords.

We’ve got to take a closer look at Applaws to decide if it’s a good choice for your cat.

Let’s just begin at the source.

Sourcing and Production
Ingredients from around the world are sourced from Applaws.

Their suppliers comply with the relevant international safety and husbandry standards, including those laid down by the Livestock Development Department of Thailand, the British Retail Consortium and the International Labour Organization. More can be found at Applaws Test

The suppliers of Applaws must be members of at least one of the following organisations:

ISSF-International Foundation for Seafood Sustainability
Council of Marine Stewardship
Institute on Earth Island
TTIA-Thai Tuna Association of Industry
In the United States, dry cat food is manufactured by Applaws, while their wet offerings are made in Thailand.

What kinds of cat food do you offer from Applaws?
In our Review, the lineup of cat food for Applaws includes dry and wet foods.

Dry food from Applaws comes in five varieties. Such recipes include named meats and remain true to the promise of no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives from the brand. To meet the nutritional requirements of a complete and balanced diet, they are fortified.

Some of the easiest ones on the market are their wet recipes. In addition to skipping animal by-products and artificial ingredients, wet food from Applaws is manufactured without any additives, including vitamins, minerals and amino acid supplements.

That means that wet food from Applaws is not considered a diet that is nutritionally complete and balanced.

Applaws dry food is suitable for feeding as the sole source of nutrition for your cat, while wet food from Applaws is best complemented by other foods.

The primary source of protein in this wet cat food appears to be tuna.

It features tuna with broth and a touch of rice in this canned food. It’s that. There are no supplemental ingredients, added oils, or added flavours in the food.

Although it looks like a meat-centric recipe at first glance and the epitome of feline-appropriate nutrition, that third and final ingredient has a major effect. On the basis of dry matter, the carbohydrate content of this food seems to sit somewhere around 14 percent.

Overall, high protein, low fat, and moderate carbohydrate content are found in this food.

The inclusion of rice seems uncalled for for foods with only three ingredients and which prides itself on simplicity. Excessive starch makes this food an unsuitable choice for the species.

The primary source of protein in this wet cat food appears to be tuna.

As its main ingredient, this mousse style food features puréed tuna. “The tuna is mixed with sardines, which are also broken down into “visible flecks” described by Applaws. It’s a combination of carrageenan and locust bean gum to hold all of this together. Both of these are plant-sourced gums that help to thicken and stabilize food.

Carrageenan has a long reputation for causing or worsening inflammation, while locust bean gum appears to be safe. It is not necessarily harmful, but it is an ingredient we would rather avoid because of its potential for harm.

Overall, with low fat and moderate carbohydrate content, this dry food has a high protein content.

Keep in mind that this is not a nutritionally complete diet, like other Applaws products. Even if it were, the use of carrageenan and extremely low fat content in this food may deter certain buyers.

The primary sources of protein in this dry cat food appear to be chicken and chicken meal.

Unlike the wet foods of the brand, dry food from Applaws is guaranteed nutritionally complete and balanced. Without adding supplements or worrying about nutritional imbalances, you can feed them every day for breakfast and dinner.

The food is a product which is grain-free. The primary sources are chicken and chicken meal, accompanied by a trio of legumes. While adding carbohydrates, fiber, and other nutrients, chickpeas, lentils, and peas serve as sources of protein. Such ingredients help to give the kibble its structure and shape. Flaxseed is a fiber source. The “natural flavours” additive makes the food more palatable. It’s a source of concentrated flavor made from animal tissue hydrolyzed. Prior to a long list of additives, these are the last primary ingredients.

A range of synthetic vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are included in the food, making each meal nutritionally complete.

Overall, with low fat and high carbohydrate content, this food has a moderate protein content.

Although this food outperforms competition in some areas, it is not perfect to think of ingredient quality and the use of harmful additives. The food shares the problems that most dry foods encounter. They’re too high in carbohydrates and too low in humidity. These qualities, combined with their low fat content, make this a species-inappropriate choice.
